Response to Survey Question 3 (2004)

Question #3 - What additional technology would be needed to fully address your pedagogical needs?

Academic Role Name Classroom Additional Technology Needed
Professor Boyce 1471 Better CD Player
Professor HMNSS 1405 more blackboard space and a lecture for holding lecture notes
Professor SPTH 2200 screen is too big, taking out the space of blackboard.
Professor Gailey SPR 1340 internet access
Professor Ganim HMNSS 1503 Computer in classroom
Professor Schlenk HMNSS 1503 The screen needs to be changed. It has been severely damaged by markers and smudges.
    Professor Zidovetzki HMNSS 1405 Clock!!
Professor Bill Gary PHY 2000 The camera/video system was not always working for my 8 a.m. class. The media resources people were always very responsive and would come over right away and get it going during my class, but I did lose class time because the system was not completely reliable.
Professor Brad Hyman BRN B118I It would be nice to have a split screen at some point in this room where two different items can be simultaneously displayed (similar to the flexibility of UNLH)
Professor Conrad Rudolph WAT 1000 Art history has had to bring its own podium and its own light to this room whenever we give a class there. That does seem like it should be a UCR responsibility, not one of the department. There's something funny about the room or the lenses in the projectors. The images are hard for the students to see, and details are apparently impossible to make out. I don't really know why this is.
Professor Edward Platzer SPTH 1307 Would like to see multimedia gear installed in rooms used for laboratory classes, i. e., Spieth 2211
Professor Helen Henry LS 1500 At the moment LS1500 has all I need.
Professor John Trumble OLMH 1208 classroom needs a higher definition projector and either a short 6" cable for the computer or a bigger podium
Professor Richard Sutch UV 9 Two projectors for dual slide use.
    Professor T. Paine UNLH 1000
    OLMH 1208
More modern overhead projector for 1208
Lecturer SPR 1102 Did not have a document camera in the classroom; this would have been useful.

    BRNHL A125
At the time of instruction in rooms Bournes A125 and Watkins 1000, those classrooms did not have computers already set up. So the instructor had to bring a laptop if he/she wanted to use the LCD projector. An inclass computer as in Life Sciences 1500 would be EXTREMELY helpful.

It would be great if you could provide a laptop computer, since I don't have/can't afford one. But I know that's pie in the sky.
Lecturer John Paullin Partially White board instead of the very dirty and dusty chalk boards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lecturer K. Brunnemer SPR 1102 working remote panel
Lecturer Kathleen Knight SPR 2355 I can't really speak to how the projector, sound system, and camera worked because I didn't know how to use them. I never had any training because by the time I received the notice about the training the date had passed. When you are walk-on staff you are really out of the loop. I would appreciate email notification of technology training in the future.
    Lecturer Kris Miller SPR 1340
    SPR 2340
This last quarter I have not had access to the remote as in previous quarters. I at times would use the remote to blow up one section of my projection. I have not found a different way to accomplish this as yet and would love to have access to the remote again.

The wireless internet signal does not reach OLMST 421, thus I was unable to share many examples with my students. I think that you should offer a High Speed connection in the room as a backup for the internet.
Grad Student Better integration of technology with course material - not a technology issue.
Grad Student SPTH 1307 None, just that the equipment in this room was very touchy. I just gave up on getting it to work.

Well, it would be nice if the VPN client proffered by computing for Windows ME actually worked for Windows ME. After trying unsuccessfully for several months to get the VPN to work, I've given up. Moreover, my e-mails this summer asking for assistance on this matter have not generated any actual help. I suspect my problem is a low priority, but it does mean I lose some functionality when using my laptop in the classroom.

My main complaint was that you couldn't fast forward (or backward) within chapters of DVDs. You could only move forward chapter by chapter. Also menu selection buttons would only allow you to move horizontally and not vertically. This meant that on some DVD menus you couldn't get to some items. Finally, no remotes were provided, as they were in the past.

It would be great to have a computer with wireless keyboard already installed in the rooms (or at least a selection of rooms that we could request). I find it hard to haul a laptop to class as frequently as I would like. I realize there are both costs and security issues. If costs could be met, couldn't the computer be bolted down in some secure way to prevent thefts?
Assoc. Professor Ward Beyermann Phy 2000 Relative to most other large classrooms, Physics 2000 needs to be updated. Ideally a podium with an electric whiteboard would be nice. Despite its shortcomings, however, the present technology I nthere works quite well. Two things should be at the top of your list for Physics 2000. First, I had a lot of complaints about the audio (the mic). Second, it would be nice to have one or two more projectors, so that multiple video sources could be displayed. The students also complain about the lighting, but I assume this is not your responsibility.
    Assist. Professor LFSC 1500
    WAT 1111
Well, it would be great if there were "leasable" laptop computers available for professors to use in smaller classrooms, to access internet directly. But I don't really see that happening in this budget climate.
Assist. Professor BRNHL B118 Nothing comes to mind.
Assist. Professor OLMH 1212 Screen is too low
Assist. Professor Kun HMNSS 1406 could not see screen clearly due to light.

Professor HMNSS 1405 good improvements this year
Professor The technology provided is fine but I find the projection technology difficult and slow when you want to switch back and forth between projection and the blackboard.
Professor SPTH 2200 Screen too big for the room.
Professor Barr HMNSS 1501 There were two times where someone from Media Services had charged the setup in the classroom but failed to test out the projector. Since I had the first class of the day I had to suffer to consequences.

Professor Ransom UNLH 1000 Everything is fine!
Professor Brad Hyman BRN B118 Everything was great and when we had a problem, the Media Services resource was very helpful. We did use the help button once and received instant assistance.
Professor Chris Amrhein SPTH 2200 The HELP button was great! The projector was dead and I got a return call on the phone within a minute and somebody came to the class with a replacement projector very quickly. Bravo!
Professor Edna Bonacich SPR 1102 I only use video, but 3/4 of the time, couldn't get some aspect to work, + I'd call for help.
Professor Helen Henry LS 1500 I really like the new "integrated" box to control things. I used the HELP button once and response was great!! Thank You.
Professor Jay Farrell HMNSS 1502 I bumped it accidentally and ended up with a helper in the classroom. Otherwise I would not have known about the service. I think the service is very good, especially if it stays at its current level.

I have not had to use the HELP button yet (that's a good sign)- so I didn't answer #11. I thought it was extremely helpful to have someone from media services show up to my first day of class. Although I had practiced using the equipment in my assigned classroom before the beginning of the quarter, it was very reassuring to have someone there just in case something went wrong or just in case I had questions. It is such a great idea to continue to do that at the beginning of every quarter--I found that EXTREMELY helpful.
Lecturer SPR 1102 I have also taught at institutions where smart classrooms have a computer in the classrooms already hooked up to the projector, in addition to a place to hook up a laptop and other audiovisual resources (DVD/VCR) - this is extremely helpful. If this is possible at UCR, it would be appreciated. Barring this development, putting document cameras in the classrooms that don't have them yet would be good.
Lecturer UV 10 You guys wee very helpful...whenever something went wrong, it was fixed ASAP. Thanks for your help this quarter!
Lecturer Amos Tubb UV 9 Derrick did a fine job
Lecturer Brian Grattan SPR 2355 I like the new control panel. Now I have no use for the key to the cabinet. The only portion of the "smart" classroom that I need is the projection.

Lecturer Dr. Cathy Lussier UV 8 Tech review before quarter began was helpful. Small note - projector "powers down" if you don't use it for the 1st half of class + needs to be turned "off" then "on" again if accessing it later in order to work. Tech helper confirmed this - may want to add note to handouts as that was a bit confusing at first to figure out.
Lecturer K. Brunnemer SPR 1102 The remote panel in SPR 1102 does not work well. Often it would take 5-10 minutes to setup a film...as the arrow keys would move 3 spots w/ light press. Very frustrating.
Lecturer Kathleen Knight SPR 2355 I hope I haven't been too harsh on your department. I usually use the overhead projector for my lectures but if I was trained I would do more power point. The students also indicated that they would like to use power point for their presentations. Thank

I haven't used the help button yet, so my NOT AT ALL means I don't know. The choices of answers proposed above don't always suit the specific questions very well. Also, I was told by an email that this questionnaire would cover the recent installation of control panels, yet nothing about this was asked. So I would like to add that I think the new control panels make usage much easier. Thank you for these! Much more trouble-free to use, and easier to read, compared to peering at controls of VCR, DVD, etc. inside a dark cabinet.
Assoc. Professor Ward Beyermann Phy 2000 I never used the HELP button in the cabinet.
Assist. Professor LS 1500 Sometimes I ran out of speaker battery during lecture, which is really bad because it is impossible to conduct my lecture without a speaker, with 200 students.

Just a note: I use Blackboard (limited) AND my own (faculty-server) website for courses; the options above wouldn't let me indicate that.
Assist. Professor Jacobs LS 1500 #8. also checked "Yes, Other Web Site".
Assist. Professor Connie Nugent STAT B650 Thankfully, I never needed the HELP button. While I use the projector in my lectures, I do depend on using the chalkboard too, so I appreciate that I have the ability to have the screen down and still have space to write on the blackboard at the same time. Some other rooms I have taught in on campus make this difficult.
Assist. Professor Jennifer Doyle WAT 1000 Although there were technical problems in Watkins 1000 (projector not shutting off), the Media Resources staff were always helpful.
Assist. Professor John Ochoa SPR 2360 Equipment malfunctioned.
Assist. Professor Jun Yang SPR 2355 The tech support has been great.
Assist. Professor Lisa Stein WAT 1000 My laptop does not have a built-in wireless connection and I didn't take the time to find the wire plugs to use internet in the classroom. It didn't really matter since I had all of the materials on the hard drive, but for showing animations, it would be nice to make live internet connection more straight forward.
Assist. Professor Michael Foster UV 8 The only two problems I found was 1 - doc cam did not project pictures from a book very clearly - I had been hoping to use it for this.
    2. Often markers for the whiteboards were partially dry and did not make for good visibility.
Assist. Professor Stefano Lonardi GEOL 1408 # 8, also checked " Yes, Other Web Site"
Assist. Professor Susan Zieger SPR 2340 I used the HELP button quite frequently b/c inspite of the newer + supposedly easier interface, problems always arise. The staff were awesome! Without their help the class would've probably been a disaster.
